Nuclear Energy: A New Beginning? And what role it might play in Australia

January 28 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Jointly hosted by ANA and Nuclear Engineering Panel of Australia, NSW.

Professor Jacopo Buongiorno

TEPCO Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

5:30 pm, Tues 28 January 2020.

Aerial UTS Function Centre, Level 7, UTS Building 10, 235 Jones Street, Ultimo, NSW.

Ten minute walk from Central Station. Paid parking at InterPark carpark on Thomas Street.

Free event. Talk will be recorded and shared online if you miss out.

Jacopo will examine the key findings of the 2018 MIT study on The Future of Nuclear Energy in a Carbon-Constrained World. The study showed that excluding nuclear energy drives up the average cost of electricity in deep decarbonisation scenarios due to the need for significant overbuild of renewables and storage. The challenge for nuclear is the cost to build new plants. The MIT study investigated why some new nuclear plants are so expensive and difficult to build and identified the innovations that would make a difference. The business opportunity for nuclear is seen to expand dramatically as cost decreases. Jacopo will also examine the opportunities for nuclear in Australia in decarbonising the grid, desalination, uranium mining and spent fuel management.

About Professor Jacopo Buongiorno
