Clean Water Hackathon 2.0

February 13 - February 15

ANSTO, in partnership with the Renal Disease Prevention Unit in the Sri Lankan Department of Health and Indigenous Medical Services, are pleased to announce the Clean Water Hackathon 2.0 will take place at Colombo Innovation Tower from 13-15 February, 2020.

This Hackathon builds upon the inaugural Clean Water Hackathon, which was held in Sydney in July, 2018. For the Clean Water Hackathon 2.0, we are looking for enthusiastic undergraduate and postgraduate students from engineering and associated disciplines.

What is a Hackathon? It’s an innovative design competition. Across three days, students will work in small teams to develop solutions to treat waste runoff from reverse osmosis water treatment plants.

The Hackathon arises from ANSTO’s continued commitment to investigate Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Cause (CKDu), a serious public health issue in the north-east of Sri Lanka.

Over the three days of the Clean Water Hackathon, participants will:

  • Join cross-institutional, multidisciplinary teams,
  • Hear from leading researchers on initiatives to deliver clean water to affected communities,
  • Receive mentoring in the development of their proposal
  • Pitch their proposal and have the chance to share in a 600,000 LKR prize for the winning team. This will include 40,000 LKR for each student in the winning team, plus 360,000 LKR towards developing the team’s proposed solution in partnership with ANSTO.

LOCATION: Colombo Innovation Tower, No. 477 R. A. De Mel Mawatha, Colombo 00400.

COST: Free – there is no charge to participate and catering will be provided. Some travel support will be available for students travelling from other parts of the country. Contact Katrina Van De Ven ([email protected]) for information.
